15th Anniversary of the Recognition of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage
November 16, 2025 | Pioppi, Italy
On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the recognition of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (2010–2025), a three-day commemorative celebration was held in Pollica, Italy, dedicated to its timeless value and contemporary significance.
Within the framework of the events at the Ancel and Margaret Keys Hall, Ms. Trichopoulou was honoured by the Municipality of Pollica as an Ambassadrice of the Mediterranean Diet, for her internationally recognised contribution to its scientific documentation and promotion. Furthermore, the role of the Mediterranean Diet was highlighted as a compass for political and social action, capable of responding to the contemporary challenges of food systems, public health, and the climate crisis.
Fifteen years after its recognition by UNESCO, the Mediterranean Diet remains a living heritage and a powerful vision for a more sustainable, equitable, and collective future. As the culmination of this international recognition, the adoption of November 16th as the International Mediterranean Diet Day by the United Nations is currently awaited.
